| Cranbury, N.J., November 27, 2006 Princeton Lightwave,
Inc. (PLI), the leading expert in high performance lasers
and detectors in the 1 um to 2 um wavelength band, has been
awarded a contract for the development of high power pump
laser diodes based on the InGaAsP semiconductor materials
system. During this two-year program, supported by $730,000
in funding from the Army , the company will deliver one-dimensional
bars and two-dimensional stacks of 1470 nm multimode diode
lasers optimized for the pumping of eye-safe solid state
laser gain media such as Er:YAG.
With past support from the Army and other defense sponsors,
PLI has realized record performance for high power laser
bars and stacks in the wavelength range from 1450 to 1550
nm. This work has included the integration of volume Bragg
grating optical elements to provide narrowed spectral output
desired for the efficient pumping of Er-doped gain media.
Previous results have included 1-cm 20% fill factor bar output
powers up to 55 W at 1532 nm with a wall plug efficiency
of 37%, as well as diode stacks with narrowed spectral output
demonstrating a record power of 230 W within a 1.5 nm spectral
bandwidth at 100 A drive current. In this current program,
PLI will significantly advance the output power, efficiency,
and spectral characteristics of diode stacks emitting at
1470 nm.
In addition to pumping eye-safe solid state lasers, PLI's
high power multi-mode diode lasers serve as direct energy
sources for biomedical and industrial applications that require
compact, efficient high power radiation at wavelengths between
1450 and 1550 nm. PLI's present generation of diode lasers
is available in stack, bar, and single emitter formats.
